Introduction - Week 1

My name is Carrie Graham. Currently, I am a senior Criminology major. I started out my freshman year as a Public Relations major with a minor in Criminology. I love to write, but I quickly figured out that I do not like learning about writing. Therefore, I decided to make my minor into my major and drop the whole Public Relations thing all together. People ask me all the time what I want to do with my major, and honestly...I am still trying to figure it out. I love Criminology and I am good at it, but it's been hard to narrow down exactly what I would like to do in that field.

I'm from Fort Worth, Texas and that is exactly where I plan to go back after college. I love Texas (as does most everyone from Texas) and I can't imagine living anywhere else. However, I am glad that I went out of state for college, I really feel like I have done a lot of growing up.

I absolutely love animals. They are my passion and have been my whole life. I get it from my mom, who gets it from her mom. We have a handful of animals at home, maybe a little more than a handful. Every animal we have at my parents house is a stray that my mom has taken in.
I finally got my own rescue pup last October, a 4 month boxer mix. He is everything to me. He's now a one year old ball of energy with legs that are longer than he can handle.

I also really enjoy traveling, and I travel a lot with my family. This past summer I went to Cabo San Lucas and Punta de Mita. Both trips were amazing, partially because the beach is my favorite place in the world. I've never been one for cold, however, last spring I went skiing in Colorado; we've gone skiing every since I was very young. I suppose you could consider that a hobby.
Aside from that, I enjoy photography and running.

That's about it. I look forward to this semester and what is {hopefully} my last year of college.

  1. Hi Carrie!

Let me start off by telling you that I understand the pangs of not knowing what to do with your degree. I'm majoring in Letters, which is really just a fancy word for Liberal Arts, and I've been racking my brain for forever trying to figure out a plan--even a temporary one. I've swung from wanting to live in Japan to teach English, to opening up a small business, to here, there, oh God when does it end!?

In all seriousness, it's just one of those things you can't force. Some people are hard wired with specific ambitions, or so it would seem, but some people just have to float in the breeze a while until they find a comfortable spot to land. I think you and I are the latter type of folk--but I think 95% of us are the same way. If you ask me, this kind of thing is at the core of the human condition. When trying to answer the big questions--who am I, what is my purpose, how will I be remembered--just remember to breathe! :)

    Cheers!
    Ryan

  2. Oh, look at those long legs!!! What a fabulous dog! We have two stray cats that we took in last year, and the tuxedo cat (named Einstein) has the nickname "Daddy Longlegs" because of his long legs, but he's got nothing on that dog of yours. We think Einstein must be part-Siamese (even though he is a tuxedo cat) because his body is really really really long, with long legs and that kind of long head that Siamese cats have, and he meows like a Siamese too. Just the opposite of our girl cat who has short little legs... but she sure can jump; it's like her legs have super-strong springs inside them. So, yes, I completely share your passion for animals. And keep an eye out for animals in the epics: there are wonderful animal characters and all kinds of ways in which animals are part of Hindu mythology. Maybe you will even want to do your Storybook on that topic... so many great stories, great artwork, all kinds of animal greatness!

  3. Carrie, I also went to Cabo San Lucas last year and loved it! It was so beautiful and fun! It's awesome that you want to move back to Ft Worth after college. I am from Oklahoma, but all of my Texas friends have a lot of Texas pride. I really admire that your family rescues animals!! This weekend I am working the Petsmart event for Second Chance Animal Shelter! I am very excited.

  4. Hi Carrie, so I too went through the same process as you involving majors. I took classes for one major, quickly figured out I didn't like it, and changed it to something I found more interesting. Now I am a sociology major and lo and behold I don't know what to do with that degree either once I graduate. I think it is a more common thing than college students like to think ;) I really love how passionate you and your family are about animals, it seems nice to share a love with family. Ooh and to travel so much with them is awesome! Memories I'm sure you all hold dear to your hearts. Good luck this semester and next! {hopefully} we can decide our career paths by the time we graduate next semester ;)

  5. Hey Carrie! Props to you for recognizing that your planned major was not for you and quickly changing to something that better suited your interests. Some of my friends back home are criminology majors, and I know that there are a variety of career opportunities out there for you--you should have no problem finding a job that you will enjoy, but good luck!!

I too love animals dearly, and my family also has a "handful" of pets back home. Pets are just so loving and companionable, and their loyalty is never-ending; you can't help but love them back! And your puppy is so adorable!! Hopefully he gets a handle on those long legs, haha.

I really enjoyed your story this week, and look forward to reading more of your posts. Hope you have a great semester!!

  6. Hi Carrie! I am from Houston so I totally understand wanting to move back home after graduation! I am graduating in December and I'm still trying to figure all of that out. I love your dog! I have two goldens at home and they are my world! I have always wanted to get a dog here at school but I just know I would not have enough time for one. I liked your story a lot this week and I can't wait to read more!

  7. Hey Carrie! If you don't figure out what to do in Criminology don't worry. Nearly any career you could possibly want would benefit from someone understanding why people do things or how certain situations produce likely outcomes (which is basically what Criminology is). It's so cool that all of your animals are strays! My past two dogs have been strays, too. We didn't really adopt them, they just showed up and didn't leave, but that's not the point. Hopefully your dog becomes less awkward as he gets a better feel for his long legs!

  8. Hey Carrie! Small world, I think you are also in several other of my classes because I am a Criminology major as well! That is interesting that you started out in Public Relations; I feel like a lot of people start out there thinking that it's going to be a fun type of writing but it turns out to be more like an English grammar class. As for not knowing about what you want to do after you graduate, I understand the not knowing! I think that is the best part about the major is that there are so many options afterwards.

  9. Hey Carrie. I think it is really cool that your family rescues your pets. I tried to adopt a german shepherd puppy this year, but my roommate was highly allergic to it and I had to send the puppy home to my parents. I've been to Cabo San Lucas as well, it is a really fun place.

  10. Hey Carrie, nice to meet you! I also love the Fort Worth area and have some family that lives up there. Its a great place, so I understand why you want to go back there after college. Being a fellow pet owner, I appreciate your love of pets and commend you and your family for taking in animals in need! Your pup is so cute and I'm glad you rescued him! Good luck this year!

  11. Hey, Carrie! That’s so cool you’re studying criminology- I don’t know anyone that’s studying that so it’s always fun to meet people with such unique majors. I admire that you’re studying what enjoy and not what you think will make the most money. Also, your dog is super cute! Do you keep him with you at OU or is he back at home? Great to meet you!

  12. Hey good morning Carrie! I'm glad I have the opportunity to be in your group this week, you seem like a very interesting person. I too love the beach, unfortunately I have yet to of made it to Cabo but I've only heard great things and hope to visit there one day. Criminology is a great major though, my cousin graduated with a minor in criminology and is currently working at a crime lab in Edmond. Well, best of luck on everything and I hope your senior year goes smoothly.

  13. It's nice to meet you Carrie!! Criminology sounds like such an awesome path to go. It would definitely be an exciting career. I think it is awesome that you are such an animal lover. My family has two rescue dogs, and I just rescued my own about a month ago! I could never imagine paying a breeder for a dog, when there are so many that need homes! Your summer sounds so exciting! I've always wanted to go to cabo! I spent my summer traveling as well, there is nothing better than going new places!

  14. Hi Carrie! It is so cool that you are passionate about animals and have been able to rescue some! I have always wanted to do it, but allergies and finances have stopped me so far. I'm determined to do it someday, though! Your dog is adorable-- he's all legs! It's also so cool that your major is Criminology. You're the first person I know who is! That's so exciting! I have a friend doing forensic science, and she found her passion in a similar way that you did-- she did it as something on the side at first but soon dropped it all to pursue her passion. Your introduction is so cool; I really enjoyed reading about your experiences. I wish you all the best!

  15. Hey Carrie! I am not a huge fan of writing so I could see how you wouldn’t like learning about writing. Criminology sounds like a really fun major. It's great that you have found something that you really love. I also really enjoy traveling. Unfortunately, I don’t see that much traveling in my future, since I am planning on taking the DAT in the summer and hopefully going to Dental school soon. But sounds like you have been to some great places.

  16. Hi Carrie, like you I also hate learning about how to write and over that I just hate writing overall because it’s my weakest subject. Your dog does have super long legs from the picture so I am assuming that he can insanely fast. Your introduction was great and you seem like a really passionate person so it was nice to meet you!

  17. Hello... I think I have already posted on your intro once before but youre in my group so I'll do it again. I liked your comment about loving to write but hating learning about it. I too feel as if some of the fun has been taken out of writing by all the classes I have had teaching me how to write. Criminology is a great degree, and narrowing down what you wanna do in the field but that just means you have options...which is a good problem to have. In my younger years I lived in Texas also and it was a great place to live so I can understand why you are headed back there after you graduate. Well it was nice to meet you and I hope you enjoy your senior year.

  18. Hey Carrie! Your dog is SOO cute!!!! Okay now that we've gotten the obvious out of the way, it is very nice to meet you. I too am a senior and will "hopefully" graduate in May. From reading your introduction I could tell that you invest your time into doing what you love, which is GREAT! Traveling is also one of my favorite things to do, specifically learning about different cultures. I'm sure you will find a job that you love doing. And like you said, you have so many options.

  19. Hi Carrie! I know I spoke to you briefly last year because you were my little's (Mary) Lily, but it's nice to get to know more about you through your introduction! I think that's awesome that you're a criminology major. I took a criminology class in high school and I thought it was badass. I'm sure your classes are very interesting. Also, that's awesome you plan on going back to Fort Worth after you graduate. My boyfriend is also from Fort Worth and that's his plan as well. I'm from Oklahoma, but I certainly understand the Texas pride! And lastly, I LOVE that picture of your dog. So adorable. (:
